About the seminar

Effectiveness of the collective national defence in Baltic States is significantly dependent on operational capacity of our partners. Improving Baltic co-operation in the field of defence, applying Geographical Information Systems (GIS),  is a process, demanding continuous update and knowledge share. 

Objectives:

  • to brief public defence sector representatives and defence related organizations in Baltic States about newest technological innovations applying geographical information systems (GIS), digital maps, geospatial analysis tools and application in national defence activities;
  • to provide an opportunity for the defence sector representatives to share best practice and positive experience in using GIS technologies, spatial data and developed geospatial solutions, which improves their activities.
  • to establish direct professional contacts.

Nick Sutherland

MSc, European Defence and Intelligence Lead Business Develop Executive, Esri, Lt Col (Ret)
Nick Sutherland has over 30 years’ experience in the defence and intelligence sector.  With 23 years military service in the British Army he filled leadership roles notably as Deputy Director of the UK Defence Geographic Centre providing GEOINT and services to operation, and was lead Staff Officer in the SHAPE, NATO.  He has deployed on operational tours to Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo and on major exercises in Kenya, Cyprus, the United States and Norway.


 


Anthony Giles

European National Government Senior Solution Engineer, Esri, Warrant Officer (Ret)

Tony Giles has over 27 years’ experience in the defence and intelligence sector. In the British Army, at the Royal Engineers he completed his recruit training at the Army Apprentices College, qualifying as a Geographic Technician. During a further 22 years of service Anthony provided geographic advice across many sectors of the Ministry of Defence, instructed on the MSc in Defence Geographic Information, Royal School of Military Survey, and seen service on operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

He joined the Esri European National Government Team as a solution engineer in May 2018.  He holds a MSC in Internet Computing from Liverpool University England. Outside his day to day working environment Anthony volunteers for the humanitarian mapping charity MapAction.


 


Tero Vauraste

Tero Vauraste, Senior BD Advisor, MSc, Lt Cdr (Ret). ICEYE - www.iceye.com

Tero Vauraste has more than 30 years of experience from Arctic, maritime, aerospace, logistics and security sectors in various Senior Executive positions. He' has served within the Finnish Navy and Coast Guard. He is a member of the DG Defis Space Expert Group and a board member of EARSC, European Association of Remote Sensing Companies.

In addition to the maritime officer degree, he has an MsC in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management from Leicester University and he is working on his PhD in the Finnish Military University in the Space and maritime domains within security of supply. He is a member of the Finnish Ministry of Defence Scientific Committee working Group Arctic and Space.


 


Artūras Kedavičius

Arturas Kedavicius, educated as a lawyer in Vilnius University, has over 26 years’ experience in the Public safety sector. 16 years of it as a police officer, starting as a police street patrol and growing up through different positions to the head of the National police information centre. In 2003 started a new nation-wide organization – Lithuanian emergency response centre and spend 10 years building and nurturing it.   

After retirement in 2013 in a rank of colonel worked 5 years for USA company Intermedix as a Director International Client Operations, since January 2019 - Senior Sales Project Manager for Public safety, Defence & Intelligence and Heath sectors with Hnit-Baltic.


 


Alfredas Gudauskas

GIS Analyst, Hnit-Baltic. Major (Ret)
 
Alfredas Gudauskas has over 23 years’ experience in the defence and intelligence sector. With 19 years of military service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. During the service, got experience in logistics, CIS, and UAS operations. Two years of service were spent on international missions.


 


Alberto Meroni

Business Development Manager, Imagery and Remote Sensing. Esri Italy

Alberto Meroni has been in software development for more than 35 years, including over 25 years’ experience in the Remote Sensing domain. He has contributed to the management, design, development, and delivery of numerous projects for the exploitation of Satellite Remote Sensing data. Major customers include ESA, EUMETSAT, ENI, IT MOD and E-GEOS. From more than ten years he has assumed the role of Product Manager for the suite of software products to process SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data, contributing to the evolution of the product and its worldwide widespread. With the advent of Copernicus missions, he has contributed to the development of cloud-based technologies for exploiting SAR Sentinel-1 data. Recently has joined ESRI in the group of Imagery and Remote Sensing with the position of Business Development Manager with the aim to foster the use of information derived from Remote sensed data in the GIS community.  


 


Inese Reriha

GIS Expert, Envirotech SIA. Retired Latvian National Armed forces officer

Inese Reriha has a master's degree in computer science with additional expertise in IMINT, GEOINT, OSINT, and Remote sensing.

Inese has previous and ongoing work experience as a lecturer and guest lecturer, researcher in such education facilities as Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, Riga Technical University, and Latvian National Defence Academy. Retired Latvian Armed Forces officer. 

Since January 2021 – GIS Expert, Baltic Defence industry coordinator in Ltd. Envirotech.


 


Erki Kokkota

Consultant, Alphagis
 

Erki Kokkota has over 20 years of experience with fieldwork, maps and GIS. A member in the Estonian Defence League since 2007. The rapid development of digital field devices helps to keep work and hobby modern. The main activities are data collection, navigation and map analysis, based on diferent tasks. Data integration with other GIS systems and explaining to the various users.


 


Enar Leht

Military Geographic Group,  Mjr.
 
Enar Leht has almost 20 years experience in GIS field and 11 years military service career. Education from Estonian Information Technology College and geodesy area knowledge from Estonian University of Life Sciences. Starting the career as a land-surveyor, GIS technology was logical next step to get new experience and knowledge and make career. Today he is leading the GIS section in Estonian Defence Forces.


 


Ott Koik

Estonian Defence Forces
 

Ott Koik has about 10 years of experience in working with geospatial data. He started as a cartographer, but continued his career as a GIS specialist. He has experience in working with various platforms and different tasks from data collection to software development. He joined Estonian Defence Forces Military Geographic Group two years ago and has MsC in GIS and Cartography.
